TRAUMA-INFORMED PROSECUTION RESOURCE

The Trauma-Informed Prosecution Project aims to develop guidance for prosecutors to incorporate trauma-informed best practices into their work in order to serve crime survivors, witnesses, people accused of crimes, and all community members.

The Roundtable

The Roundtable convened 40 mental health and criminal justice experts to explore ways in which prosecutors’ offices can better address the range of traumas suffered by the people and communities prosecutors serve. The conversation spanned racial and gender-based violence, re-traumatization of crime survivors, the traumas caused by system involvement, secondary trauma experienced by criminal justice lawyers, and inter-generational trauma, all in the context of a prosecutor’s ethical responsibilities and legal obligations. The IIP and our partners are inspired for the next steps towards transforming both individual and system responses to trauma.

The Resource

The purpose of this presentation is to give prosecutors a basic understanding of trauma and how it affects their cases. The presentation will give you the fundamentals of trauma and how it manifests in the mind and body. With this knowledge, the presentation seeks to connect the effects of trauma and how it affects witnesses, crime survivors, and those accused of crimes. The presentation will provide real life examples of interactions prosecutors have with individuals throughout their case and how to approach those interactions in a trauma-informed manner.
